Bill Gates is sounding another alarm about artificial intelligence, but this warning carries an unsettling twist: Humanity may not wake up to the dangers of AI until something goes terribly wrong.
The Microsoft co-founder, speaking during the week of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, acknowledged that warnings about the technology’s potential dangers may simply not be enough to move governments and societies into action.
“One thing that’s clear is if you have a big cyber attack that caused a lot of problems, then people will say, ‘Okay, they were right. The people who are talking about that were right,’” Gates said in an interview with CBS Evening News.
Then came the statement that should make people pay attention.
“So, it may be that we have to suffer a few of the negatives before we’ll respond as fully as we should,” he said.

When asked whether that meant it could actually take a catastrophe for the world to confront AI’s dangers, Gates responded, “That’s fair.”
And these aren’t minor technological glitches Gates is talking about.
The segment pointed to bioterrorism and mass unemployment among the catastrophic possibilities Gates has discussed. He has even compared the global challenge surrounding AI to an alien invasion, something so consequential that nations would be forced to put aside their differences and prepare together.
Think about where this conversation has gone.
Artificial intelligence was sold to much of the world as the next great technological revolution. Now, some of the world’s most influential technology figures are openly discussing scenarios involving cyberattacks, biological threats and widespread job displacement.
For Christians, this moment should demand discernment, not panic.
Scripture repeatedly demonstrates what happens when mankind possesses knowledge without wisdom and power without righteous restraint. From Genesis onward, the Bible warns about humanity’s temptation to exalt its own achievements while ignoring its dependence upon God. Now, we just may be in the position that we will take significant losses if we do not recognize how much we need God in the middle of an unprecedented revolution.
If Gates is correct that humanity may have to “suffer” consequences before responding, the real question may be whether the world will recognize the warning signs before catastrophe becomes the teacher.
