The world saw a passenger restrained with duct tape aboard American Airlines Flight 618. Jonathan Cahn saw something far more dangerous unfolding behind the headlines: a spiritual attack that erupted after he shared the gospel and revealed the power of God.
This was not simply an unruly passenger losing control. It was a physical confrontation fueled by a battle in the spiritual realm.
Cahn said the man sitting beside him was initially friendly. They spoke about their families, faith and Cahn’s ministry. Cahn explained salvation through Jesus, the need to be born again and the prophetic evidence that once led him out of atheism.
Then everything changed.
“I have never seen someone change in a split second from light to dark as I saw that,” Cahn said. “As if something had taken him over.”
The timing matters. The passenger did not erupt during a casual disagreement. According to Cahn, his demeanor changed as Cahn spoke about the gospel and the reality of God’s power.
“What changed was me telling him the gospel and then getting into the reality and the real power of God on earth in our lives,” Cahn said.
The man began cursing Jesus, blaspheming God and directing his rage toward Cahn. He placed his hands around Cahn’s neck, threatened to punch his “Jewish face,” struck him and later attempted to seize his laptop.
That laptop contained the work Cahn believes the enemy wanted silenced. He had used it to write The Altar of Pergamon, a book examining an ancient structure connected in Revelation 2:13 to “Satan’s throne.”

When the passenger saw the book’s cover on the computer, his agitation intensified.
“He sees the cover. He sees this. You’ll put it up. And it triggers him,” Cahn recalled. “He’s saying, ‘What did you do? What did you do?’”
Cahn believes the enemy was attempting to destroy the instrument used to produce a message exposing the works of darkness.
“In the natural, those two things could not be connected. But in the spiritual realm, things are connected,” he said.
That is the reality Christians cannot afford to dismiss. Scripture tells us that “we wrestle not against flesh and blood” but against spiritual powers. People remain responsible for their actions, but the forces influencing and exploiting human anger are not always visible.
Cahn does not express hatred toward his attacker. He recognizes the true enemy and prays for the man’s salvation.
“I have nothing against him,” Cahn said. “He didn’t know what he was doing. I pray for him. I pray for the for his best. I pray he gets saved.”
That response demonstrates how we must fight. We resist darkness without surrendering our compassion for those trapped within it. We refuse to deny the spiritual war taking place around us.
“The enemy is real, but that means God is real,” Cahn said. “God is more real and his word is real, and his promises are real.”
Flight 618 revealed both realms at once. The attack was physical, but the battle behind it was spiritual. And in that battle, Christians must discern the enemy, stand firm and never surrender the ground God has given us.
