A Christian missionary camp was expelled from Burning Man after organizers accused its members of repeatedly violating festival policies while sharing the gospel and conducting baptisms in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.

Federal officers and volunteer Black Rock Rangers ordered Shift the Atmosphere to dismantle its camp Sept. 2, giving members about three hours to begin leaving. Israel365 News reported that the group worked through the night after spending a week constructing the site.

Burning Man spokesperson Dominique Debucquoy-Dodley said the eviction resulted from repeated violations of the festival’s consent and privacy policies.

“This camp received multiple warnings and opportunities to correct their behavior, yet continued to violate our policies and were therefore evicted,” Debucquoy-Dodley said.

Witnesses accused the group of filming attendees, including children, without permission while encouraging them to accept Jesus. The camp was positioned near Kidsville, an area serving families and more than 1,000 children.

Camp organizer John Hinerman disputed the official account and argued that the ministry was targeted for its Christian message.

“We are being kicked out of Burning Man for having faith in Jesus?! So much for radical inclusion,” Hinerman said in an Instagram post.

Hinerman also claimed more than 600 people gave their lives to Christ during the gathering.

“We have over 600 people who have given their lives to Jesus already, and Satan can’t do anything about it,” he said.

The camp also performed baptisms in communal water tanks. Critics said the practice may have violated Nevada health regulations concerning unlicensed pools. Neighboring campers further alleged that the ministry left equipment behind when it departed.

Even if Shift the Atmosphere violated legitimate rules, its removal has placed Burning Man’s “Radical Inclusion” principle under renewed scrutiny. The festival has long welcomed pagan and occult-inspired imagery, including temples honoring foreign deities, a seven-headed dragon and its annual burning of a giant wooden effigy.

Those displays have remained part of Burning Man’s celebrated culture. Open Christian evangelism and baptism, however, ended with an entire camp being removed before the festival concluded.

Burning Man describes Radical Inclusion as welcoming strangers without prerequisites. Its treatment of Shift the Atmosphere reveals that when Christians openly proclaim Jesus, that welcome may have limits.
