There are some things human strength simply cannot break.
You can have the right strategy, the right connections and even the right words, but when the battle is spiritual, something greater is required: the power of God.
In a recent teaching, apostle John Eckhardt unpacked Isaiah 61 and the biblical purpose of the anointing, pointing believers back to the One who has the power to bring freedom, healing, deliverance and breakthrough.
Isaiah prophesied of the coming Messiah, declaring that the Spirit of the Lord would rest upon Him to preach good news, heal the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to captives and exchange beauty for ashes.
These weren’t merely poetic promises. They pointed directly toward Jesus Christ.
“The word Christ, by the way, actually means the Anointed One,” Eckhardt says. “Jesus the Christ, the Anointed One.”
That distinction matters.

While Scripture demonstrates that God can anoint His people for specific assignments, offices and ministries, Jesus is uniquely the Christ—the Messiah and Savior who came to deliver humanity from the power of sin and darkness.
Eckhardt describes the anointing as “God’s empowerment,” “God’s grace,” “God’s ability,” and “God’s gifting.”
But perhaps the most powerful part of his message is what that empowerment is designed to accomplish.
Pointing to Isaiah 10:27, Eckhardt says, “The yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”
A yoke represents bondage, slavery and oppression. The biblical picture, then, is unmistakable: God’s power confronts the very things attempting to keep people bound.
“The purpose of the anointing is to lift burdens and to destroy yokes,” Eckhardt says.
This is precisely what we see throughout the ministry of Jesus.
Eckhardt points to Acts 10:38, which describes how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power and how Christ went about doing good and healing those oppressed by the devil. Wherever Jesus went, darkness collided with the kingdom of God.
Captives were liberated. The sick were healed. Demons fled. Broken lives were restored.
And Eckhardt says the fundamental purpose of God’s anointing has not changed.
“It’s still the same purpose today,” he says. “When God anoints people, he anoints them to bring deliverance, to bring rescue, to bring healing, to deliver people from the oppression of darkness.”
That should challenge the church.
Anointed ministry is not merely emotional preaching, impressive music or spiritual terminology. The presence and power of God should produce transformation.
As Eckhardt puts it, “Whenever there’s an anointing, people are set free.”
Perhaps you have been staring at a yoke that seems impossible to break. Maybe heaviness has lingered longer than expected. Maybe circumstances look more like ashes than beauty.
Isaiah 61 reminds us that ashes are not where Christ’s story ends.
Jesus is still the Anointed One. He is still the Deliverer.
And as Eckhardt declares near the conclusion of his message, “By believing in Him, you can be set free, and you can be released from any captivity, any bondage in your life.”
Your breakthrough isn’t dependent upon human strength.
Look to the One whose anointing destroys the yoke.
