What if some of the most terrifying imagery in the book of Revelation is pointing toward realities the modern world is only now capable of understanding?
Jonathan Cahn is taking a closer look at the trumpet judgments of Revelation—and the connections he draws between Wormwood, nuclear catastrophe, the Euphrates River and a mysterious army numbering 200 million are difficult to ignore.
Beginning with the first trumpet, Cahn points to a recurring pattern woven throughout Revelation: destruction involving one-third of the earth, trees, seas and waters. He connects this imagery not only with Ezekiel’s prophetic judgments but also with the plagues that struck Egypt.
Then comes Wormwood.
Revelation describes a great star falling from heaven “burning like a torch,” poisoning a third of the waters. Cahn notes that John was a first-century man describing a vision without the vocabulary of modern warfare.
“Interesting because a nuclear missile would look like a burning torch at night,” Cahn says.

Yet Cahn is careful not to claim that Revelation definitively predicts nuclear missiles. Instead, he raises the possibility that modern technology may help us envision biblical descriptions that previous generations struggled to comprehend.
That possibility becomes even more intriguing when Cahn turns to Chernobyl.
The catastrophic 1986 nuclear accident spread radioactive contamination across parts of Europe and the Soviet Union. Cahn highlights what he sees as a remarkable linguistic connection between Chernobyl and wormwood. He also points to an angel monument at Chernobyl depicting an angel holding a trumpet—imagery with an unmistakable resemblance to Revelation’s trumpet judgments.
But Revelation gets darker.
The fifth trumpet opens the abyss, releasing horrifying locust-like beings capable of tormenting humanity. Cahn argues these are no ordinary insects.
“They have a king over them,” he says, pointing to the angel of the abyss called Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek—names associated with destruction and the destroyer.
Then comes the sixth trumpet.
Revelation describes four beings bound at the Euphrates being released, followed by an army numbering an almost incomprehensible 200 million.
Cahn connects this passage with Revelation 16, where the Euphrates dries up to prepare the way for the “kings of the east.”
“The Euphrates River has been flowing for thousands of years,” Cahn says, before pointing to reports of its modern decline.
He then turns toward China, noting the country’s enormous population of military-age citizens while considering whether the prophecy’s eastern army could ultimately point in that direction.
Still, Cahn’s message is not one of panic.
Perhaps the most important part of his teaching comes after the terrifying imagery.
Revelation does not reveal darkness, so believers will become obsessed with fear. It reveals that history is moving toward an appointed conclusion—and God remains sovereign over it.
“You don’t live to the victory,” Cahn says. “You live from the victory.”
Wars may rage. Nations may shake. The Euphrates may dry. And mysteries written nearly 2,000 years ago may suddenly appear startlingly relevant.
But for those whose lives belong to Jesus Christ, the final message of Revelation remains the same: God finishes what He begins.
