Ryan Miller Tells Russell Brand How Former Satanist Interview Became a Crash Course in Spiritual Warfare

Spiritual warfare is a reality every follower of Jesus Christ will face. Scripture teaches that our battle is against rulers, authorities and spiritual forces of evil, not merely the challenges we can see with our own eyes. While those battles don’t always unfold the same way, believers are called to stand firmly on God’s Word, remain filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly declare the name of Jesus in prayer.

During a recent conversation with Russell Brand, podcast host Ryan Miller shared how interviewing a former leader of the Church of Satan in South Africa transformed his understanding of that reality. What began as a conversation about one man’s dramatic conversion soon became, according to Miller, a firsthand lesson in the seriousness of spiritual warfare, the power of united prayer and the authority of Jesus Christ over the kingdom of darkness.

A Former Satanist Meets Jesus

As Brand listened, Miller recounted the testimony of Riann Swiegelaar, the former head of the Church of Satan in South Africa, who says his life changed forever during what was supposed to be a satanic ritual.

According to Miller, Swiegelaar was preparing for a ceremony intended to determine whether the Antichrist had already been born when everything changed.

“He turns around,” Miller told Brand. “He said, ‘I see a Middle Eastern man.’ And he says, ‘Who are you?’ He says, ‘I’m Yeshua of Nazareth.'”

Swiegelaar said he was instantly overwhelmed by a love unlike anything he had ever known.

“The same feeling that I had from her is what I experienced a million X from Yeshua in this room,” he said, recalling the kindness a Christian woman had shown him weeks earlier.

Miller said Swiegelaar abandoned Satanism, surrendered his life to Christ and eventually became a bold witness for the Gospel.

Brand briefly joked about the structure of the Church of Satan before listening as Miller detailed Swiegelaar’s testimony and the events that followed.

“I Think This Is an Attack”

Miller told Brand he went to bed after recording the interview believing it had simply been one of the best conversations he’d ever had.

Instead, he and his wife spent two straight nights unable to sleep despite feeling no fear or anxiety. On the third night, all three of their children began projectile vomiting at the same time.

“It clicks,” Miller said. “‘Uh-oh. I think this is an attack.'”

He said he later developed a severely inflamed eye and painful sores in his throat while his wife also became sick. As he walked and prayed through his neighborhood, he repeatedly encountered snakes over the next two months.

Seeking answers, Miller called Swiegelaar.

“‘I’ve been meaning to tell you,'” Miller recalled him saying. “‘You’re all over the message boards.'”

According to Miller, Swiegelaar told him the interview had spread through satanic online communities and that individuals were placing curses on him and his family.

Standing Firm in Christ

Miller admitted to Brand that he once would have dismissed a story like his own.

“If I would have been on the other side of this podcast two years ago, I would have been like, ‘This guy’s a quack,'” he said.

Coming from a conservative Reformed background, Miller said God used these experiences to deepen his understanding of spiritual warfare.

Rather than responding with fear, he gathered believers to pray, anointed the doors of his home, took communion with his family and declared the authority of Jesus Christ over his household.

That response reflects the pattern Scripture gives believers. Jesus never instructed His followers to fear the kingdom of darkness. He gave them authority in His name. James tells believers to submit to God and resist the devil. Paul urges the church to put on the whole armor of God. Spiritual warfare is not won through panic or superstition but through obedience to Christ, dependence on the Holy Spirit and confidence in the finished work of the cross.

Our attention should never become fixed on darkness. It belongs on Jesus.

The Power of United Prayer

Despite those steps, Miller told Brand the heaviness lingered until he made a simple request on Instagram.

“Miller home in shambles. Please pray.”

Thousands of Christians responded.

“I’m telling you, within five minutes of putting out that post, something physically broke,” Miller said. “It wasn’t just like, ‘Oh, I don’t feel as anxious anymore.’ There was something that happened spiritually that broke off.”

Miller’s testimony points believers back to a biblical truth: spiritual warfare is real, but Christ’s victory is greater. The answer is not fear or fascination with the enemy. It is to remain rooted in Scripture, filled with the Holy Spirit and unwavering in the authority of Jesus Christ. The cross was not only where our sins were forgiven—it was where the powers of darkness were defeated. Because of that, we don’t fight for victory. We fight from it.
