The mysterious shaking that rattled Florida’s east coast earlier this month wasn’t the result of a rare earthquake—it was part of a carefully orchestrated military test designed to prepare America’s newest warships for the realities of combat.

Residents across portions of Florida reported feeling the ground shake around 3 p.m. on July 16 after what the U.S. Geological Survey initially classified as an “experimental explosion.” The seismic event, recorded at a preliminary magnitude of 3.9, occurred roughly 91 miles east-northeast of Ponce Inlet, prompting widespread speculation online about what had happened. According to the USGS, however, the seismic signature more closely resembled an explosion than a naturally occurring earthquake.

According to ClickOrlando, officials later confirmed the blast was tied to a U.S. Navy test.

The U.S. Navy said the explosion was part of certification testing involving the future USS Ted Stevens, a new guided missile destroyer undergoing evaluation before entering operational service. A Navy spokesperson said the vessel is completing tests as part of the certification process for its missile program.

Military shock trials are designed to simulate the kinds of underwater explosions a ship could encounter during wartime, including blasts from naval mines or torpedoes. Engineers use the tests to evaluate a vessel’s structural integrity and determine whether critical systems—including electronics, weapons and communications—remain operational after sustaining intense shock waves.

While startling to nearby residents, the exercise is part of a long-established Navy process for validating the survivability of newly constructed warships. According to the Naval Sea Systems Command, Full Ship Shock Trials expose vessels to controlled underwater detonations to confirm they can continue operating under harsh combat conditions before joining the fleet.

The magnitude of the blast was strong enough to register on seismic monitoring equipment, causing many Floridians to initially believe they had experienced an earthquake—an uncommon occurrence in the Sunshine State. Social media quickly filled with reports from residents asking whether a quake had struck the region before officials clarified the source of the shaking.

The event occurred at approximately 3:04 p.m. and was recorded near the surface by the USGS.

Although the explosion generated concern, Navy officials have historically said these types of tests are conducted under strict environmental guidelines. Previous shock trials have included monitoring programs intended to minimize impacts on marine mammals and other wildlife while still allowing the military to gather critical data about a ship’s ability to withstand battle conditions.

Scripture reminds us that true security is ultimately found not in military strength but in the Lord. Psalm 20:7 (MEV) declares, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.”

While governments prepare for the uncertainties of tomorrow, Christians can pray both for the men and women who serve in uniform and for God’s protection and peace in an increasingly unstable world.
