As the government shutdown continues to loom, millions are wondering what is going to happen to their SNAP benefits.
According to a report from CNBC, the Trump administration has asked for a federal appeals court to place a block on the requirement that full funding be provided for the month of November. The administration is seeking for the 1st Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to approve their plan which would give 65% of the benefit amount. Previously, U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell rejected the administration’s partial funding plan.

This comes as the Trump administration was originally ordered to give the 42 million Americans on SNAP full benefit amounts by Friday, Nov. 7. As USA Today noted, McConnell ordered for the administration to use contingency funding in order for those on food stamps to receive the full amount. However, the Trump administration noted that if they were to do so, these funds which are to support nutrition programs for children, would experience “an unprecedented and significant shortfall.”
Judge McConnell stated that this concern “run[s] so contrary to the evidence and are so implausible as to make them arbitrary and capricious.”
CBC further noted how McConnell said, “The evidence shows that people will go hungry, food pantries will be overburdened and needless suffering will occur.”
The outlet also shared how Vice President JD Vance said the ruling was “absurd,” stating “In the midst of a shutdown, we can’t have a federal court telling the president how he has to triage the situation…we’re going to do it according to what we think we have to do to comply with the law, of course, but also to actually make the government work for the people in the midst of the Democratic government shutdown.”

The next few days will be crucial in determining whether full funding will be restored or partial payments will move forward. For now, all eyes are on the court’s decision and when the government shutdown will officially end.
