We are looking into the words of the Hebrew prophet Samuel to discover principles that need to be operative in our lives for breakthrough in the Spirit, which result in emotional, psychological and physical healing touching every area of our lives.
“When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the stronghold” (2 Sam. 5:17, NASB 1995).
Notice that as soon as David was anointed king, he was attacked by the Philistines. The application here is this: When we are anointed and moving forward in the Spirit, we will face supernatural resistance just as David did. It is like the law of gravity. It is just that simple. When we become a greater threat to darkness, as we grow in power, we can expect the devil to fight us. But learn this lesson: David did something. He responded to the attack. He reacted to the enemy. He was not passive. When you and I respond vigorously and aggressively to the enemy, we will grow in our effectiveness to dispel him. But if we are hesitant and afraid, he will continue to beat us up. That is what he does.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10a).
But Jesus assures us with these words: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10b).
Picture that David is in the stronghold now. His first response to the enemy’s assault is to dig deep into God. He now has the confidence to inquire of the Lord, “’Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You give them into my hand?’” (2 Sam. 5:19a).

David was clinging to God. He did not just rush in to attack the Philistines. David had enough wisdom to realize that unless God went before him, and God was with him, he would not succeed.

Too many of us make all kinds of critical and everyday decisions in our life without initially consulting God. We go forward in making financial, marital, job and many other life decisions without first going into our stronghold—by sitting before God and opening our heart to Him, praying, waiting on Him, becoming dependent on Him and then obeying Him. Often we just go about life living in the natural, making choices on our own without adequately clinging to the Lord. Beloved, David was victorious because he feared HaShem and realized that if he did not cleave to God, he was going to be defeated.
David centered himself in the Father and then asked Him, “Shall I go?”
God answered him, “And the Lord said to David, ‘Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand'” (2 Sam. 5:19a).
We do not have to contemplate whether we will be victorious in life. If we cling to God, we will win!
The Scriptures promise this to all of God’s children: “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us” (Rom. 8:37).
“You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
“If God is for us, who is against us?” (Rom. 8:31).
The grave, death and the forces of darkness could not hold Jesus down. He came back to life, rose up from the pit, ascended through all the powers of darkness and hell, and is now seated at the right hand of Father God! The same power that raised Yeshua is at work in our lives today (Rom. 8:11). We will experience His resurrection when we cling to Father with every fiber within us.
When we cling to the Lord, we receive from God. And when we receive from Him, we arise and conquer.
“So David came to Baal-perazim and defeated them there; and he said, ‘The LORD has broken through my enemies before me like the breakthrough of waters.’ Therefore he named that place Baal-perazim (which means breakthrough)” (2 Sam. 5:20).
The parallel depiction of this incident is in the book of Chronicles. Although it is the same account, there is one significant additional detail there.
“So they came up to Baal-perazim, and David defeated them there; and David said, ‘God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.’ Therefore they named that place Baal-perazim” (1 Chron. 14:11).
Notice David said, “By my hand, like the breakthrough of waters.” What is the point? God did not defeat the Philistines without David’s involvement.
Many of Father’s children are just waiting for Him to defeat their enemies. But often God is not going to overthrow our enemies apart from us. He is going to rout our enemies primarily through us. We have to get aggressive.
David confronted the enemy. God said, “Go up and attack them.” Then David physically went up against the enemy, and God gave him victory! We have to do something. We have to take authority. The devil is not going to go away until we make him go away. We need to get mad in order to get glad and be victorious!
