Your voices shape your choices and then your choices reinforce your voices. What voices are you listening to and how can you reign them in so that they don’t undermine you and actually move you forward? How do you know if it’s truly God speaking to you — and what if you heard incorrectly; or assumed the voice you heard was God’s and acted on it, only to learn that it wasn’t God at all? These are not just great questions to ask. They’re essential to answer.
I spent nearly two decades as a pastor and ministered on four continents. In my last church, I presided as the senior pastor over a flock of over 1,000 — and I left after realizing we had all put God in a nice, neat box. That’s something I never want to do again — and it’s something I want to spare you from doing too because the road to recovery is a long, painful one that you need not travel.
I’ve heard God’s voice multiple times and I’ve also heard counterfeits. Today there’s a huge push for everyone to be able to hear God’s voice — but if you’re wrong in what you think you hear, the consequences can be devastating — even permanent.
And while it’s great to have people help you with personal accountability, you also need specific accountability tools to help you become the person you really want to become.
