As Americans gather to celebrate Independence Day, we remember the courage of the colonists who broke free from British rule. But beyond fireworks and flags, this day points to something deeper, a spiritual truth about freedom and bondage that still speaks today.
In a compelling message, prophetic voice and New York Times best-selling author Jonathan Cahn draws a powerful parallel between the liberty sought by the American colonists and the kind of spiritual freedom we all need in our lives.

“We also become joined to things that are not good,” Cahn says. “Entangled, dependent, bound and the Scripture says, ‘cast off that sin that so easily entangles you.’”

Cahn reminds us that like the colonists who were already living under oppression before declaring independence, we too live in a fallen world. Whether we recognize it or not, every one of us is born into spiritual bondage. And until we’re ready to break free, we remain enslaved to the things that try to take God’s place in our hearts.
“They realized the price, the cost, and came to the point of saying, ‘the cost of being with Britain is not worth it. The price is not worth it. The tax is not worth it.’ So with sin, with bondage, with habit. If you would be free of that thing or that unhealthy thing or whatever that thing is you have to come to the point where you realize it’s not worth it. The cost of that sin in your life is not worth it,” Cahn explains.
Just as the colonists knew they could not live under British rule and still be free, Cahn urges believers to recognize that true spiritual liberty requires a complete turning away from sin.
“To declare freedom is treason to the forces of tyranny. To the forces of the enemy, it’s treason,” he says.
Declaring your spiritual independence won’t come without a fight. It requires boldness, risk and resolve. But it’s only when you make that decisive break from bondage that you can walk in the freedom God intended.
“They came to that absolute point of saying, ‘no matter what, we’re out of the old. No matter what, we’re out of that bondage,’” Cahn says.

So as we celebrate the birth of a nation, it’s also a moment to remember the greater freedom found in Christ. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty—a liberty that goes beyond political freedom and sets the soul free from sin and death.
