Since she was 15, Emily Thomes had identified as a lesbian. She also still considered herself a Christian, albeit a more progressive and liberated Christian: “If you were truly a Christian, you were on my side. If you weren’t, you were legalistic and you needed to reread what God was really about: judge not. God being love meant God was nice and God was chill with what you were cool with.” But an encounter with some coworkers’ Bible study completely changed her perspective.
