Proverbs 18:22 Wives are good things. Some women may object to being called a “thing,” but it is a good thing when a man finds a wife and enters married life. Not everyone will marry, and I was beginning to think none of my boys would ever get married. From the time they were small boys I prayed for godly mates for them. Now they are all married to godly wives, and we have grandchildren. All three were married in a span of nine months. I share this with singles that are looking for a mate to illustrate how fast things can change in their lives.

A wife is a good thing because she is a helpmate for her husband, and believe me, my boys needed all the help they could get. They are all fine young men, but they are still under construction, as we all are. It thrills me to see how their wives have exhorted and encouraged them to be the best Christians, lovers, partners, businessmen, sons and fathers they could be. These precious “things” have undergirded and supported my sons, and they have also polished many of their rough edges. They have comforted them when they were down and cheered them to reach heights they never could have achieved without their constant affirmations and appreciation for the potential latent within each of them.

As I thought of the role of a wife as helpmate, my mind was drawn to the Holy Spirit. He is our helper, and His function in our lives is very similar to the function of a wife. He exhorts, encourages, supports, guides, undergirds, teaches and challenges us to reach our greatest potential in the Lord. He also polishes our rough edges as He conforms us to the image of Jesus Christ. For those that are not married, the good news is that you have a helpmate (the Holy Spirit) who is your helper through life. We all have found a good thing by allowing the Holy Spirit to be our helper.

Lord, thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to be my helper through this life. He is always available to help me if I will just turn to Him daily whenever I need help.
