EastLake Community Church is mourning the loss of a beloved member after a powerful storm system that swept across the eastern United States turned deadly Friday night, collapsing a large tent during the church’s anniversary celebration in Virginia.

According to NBC News, the severe weather outbreak stretched from Texas to New York, bringing damaging winds, hail and tornadoes across multiple states. One of the most tragic incidents occurred in Moneta, Virginia, when strong winds caused a tent at an EastLake Community Church event to collapse on hundreds of attendees gathered beneath it.

NBC reported that one person was killed and 22 others were injured when the structure gave way. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as powerful winds suddenly struck the area.

“Boom. It just went right over our heads,” attendee Jordan Cragun told NBC News. Cragun said one of the tent poles narrowly missed his children during the collapse.

Authorities told NBC the tent had been properly secured before the storm hit. Witnesses also said church leaders had begun trying to evacuate people moments before the collapse occurred.

As emergency crews responded and the community grappled with the tragedy, the identity of the victim was released. According to a local Virginia outlet, WSLS 10, the man who died was longtime church member Bob Stover.

On Sunday morning, EastLake Community Church gathered for special Hope and Healing services at its Roanoke and Smith Mountain Lake campuses, where church leaders and members remembered Stover’s life and legacy.

“For 20 years, Bob and Nancy fed all of us,” Pastor Troy Keaton said during the service, according to WSLS 10. “One year, they had over 200 families in their home for a meal. They literally fed all of us. And it’s our turn to feed you.”

The tribute painted a picture of a man known not only for his faithfulness to the church but also for his generosity and hospitality. Church leaders encouraged members to rally around Stover’s family during the difficult days ahead.

The emotional toll of the tragedy was evident throughout the service.

Moments like these raise difficult questions that do not always have easy answers. Yet even amid grief, EastLake Community Church’s response has reflected the biblical call to “weep with those who weep” (Rom. 12:15).

As members mourn the loss of a friend, husband and fellow believer, they are leaning on the hope that sustains Christians through every storm: that while tragedy may come without warning, God’s presence remains steadfast in the midst of sorrow.
