As U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin gear up for their Alaska meeting today, here are three key facts you need to know.
1. This may be the Trump’s opportunity to prove himself as the lead unifier and peacemaker across the world.
As the Associated Press noted, Trump meeting with Putin will be a major player for the outcome of the war with Ukraine, and even the security of Europe as a whole.
“This sit-down offers Trump a chance to prove to the world that his both a master dealmaker and a global peacemaker,” the AP writes. This comes right after Trump declared himself the “peace president” following his meeting with Armenia and Azerbaijan. Now, he has the chance to prove that he can do it again.

2. Russia has been warned of the consequences if they do not cooperate with Ukraine.
Fox News reported how Trump has made it clear that if Putin and Russia try to block the peace process with Ukraine, they will endure “very severe” consequences regarding their economy.

Currently, Putin seems open to discussions regarding Ukraine with Trump, stating that the president is, “making, in my opinion, quite energetic and sincere efforts to stop the hostilities…and reach agreements that are of interest to all parties involved,” Reuters reported.
3. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not be present at the meeting.
According the ABC News, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy will not be at the summit. Right now, it is President Trump’s hope that what happens today will lead to further discussion which would incorporate Zelenskyy.
“I think it’s going to be a good meeting, but the more important meeting will be the second meeting that we’re having,” Trump said. “We’re going to have a meeting with President Putin, President Zelenskyy, myself and maybe we’ll bring some of the European leaders, maybe not.”
