French President Macron revealed Trump even proposed a ceasefire initiative to de-escalate tensions. In response to the crisis, Trump asked the National Security Council to be on alert as he returned to the White House.

During the summit, Trump also refused to back a G7 joint statement calling for Israel-Iran de-escalation and defended the 2014 decision to expel Russia from the G8—suggesting that excluding Putin may have contributed to the Ukraine war.
