NASA Investigates Mysterious Moon Pit That Could Lead to Massive Underground Cave

NASA is preparing to investigate one of the Moon’s strangest mysteries. This time, scientists aren’t just looking at what’s on the lunar surface. They want to know what’s hiding underneath it.

According to the Daily Mail, NASA plans to investigate the Marius Hills Pit, a gaping hole on the moon that scientists believe could be an entrance to a much larger underground cave or lava tube.

And this is no tiny crack in the ground.

The pit is reportedly roughly the same depth as a 10-story building, and its opening is about the size of an American football field. It was discovered by Japan’s SELENE spacecraft in 2009 and is one of 300 pits identified on the moon.

Now, the Planetary Science Institute is preparing to take a deeper look. The project, known as GIMLI, will use seismic sensors ground-penetrating radar, and gravity measurements to determine whether something much larger stretches beneath the surface, the Daily Mail reported.

If scientists do uncover a substantial lava tube, the discovery could have major implications for humanity’s future on the moon. An underground cavern could potentially shield astronauts from dangerous radiation and the moon’s brutal temperature changes.

The moon may look barren from Earth, but beneath that dusty surface could be an entirely different story. As NASA prepares for a new era of lunar exploration, one mysterious hole may give scientists their first real glimpse into what the moon has been hiding all along.
