Nearly half a million people have disappeared from the Episcopal Church’s membership rolls in just ten years.

The Episcopal Church’s recently released 2025 Parochial Report shows membership has plunged from nearly 2 million in 2015 to approximately 1.4 million in 2025.

More specifically, The Christian Post reported that membership dropped from approximately 1.917 million in 2015 to 1.425 million in 2025. That means roughly 492,000 members have been lost in a single decade.

And it’s not just membership that is shrinking.

Average in-person Sunday attendance has fallen from nearly 600,000 in 2015 to about 407,000 in 2025, according to the Episcopal Church. While attendance has recovered from the pandemic-era low of about 300,000 in 2021, the denomination still sees nearly 200,000 fewer people in the pews each Sunday thana decade ago.

The number of open parishes and missions declined from 6,707 in 2024 to 6,673 in 2025. Baptisms fell from 19,624 to 19,316 during that same period.

The numbers come after years of theological battles within the denomination.

The report also noted that the Episcopal Church’s embrace of progressive theology has contributed to division and departures over the years. One of the most significant fractures came in 2003, when the denomination consecrated Gene Robinson as its first openly gay bishop.
