It’s been nearly 20 years since the “Passion of The Christ” was released in theatres and the impacts of the film were inconceivable. Now, Mel Gibson is embarking on another journey to begin filming “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection.”
Filming should begin around mid-2023 and World of Reel reports the new movie will focus on the events that occurred three days between Jesus crucifixion and resurrection. Actor Jim Caviezel, who played Jesus in the original movie is reportedly set to return to the sequel.
“The Passion” became the eighth highest-grossing domestic film of all-time making $612 million worldwide. Back in 2004, Barna released a study on the impacts of the movie in the Christian community. In their study 53% of people interviewed said the movie had a significant impact on their faith and walk with God.
Talking about the new movie, Gibson tells CP Entertainment, “Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it’s not ‘The Passion 2.’ It’s called ‘The Resurrection.’ Of course, that’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it.”
Screenwriter, Randall Wallace is taking on the project and said in an interview that, “The evangelical community considers ‘The Passion’ the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger.”
Wallace and Gibson have taken a significant amount of time to research and study the Bible and explore the deeper meanings surrounding the resurrection of Jesus Christ. “But in order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s going to take some doing, and Randall Wallace is up to the task,” Gibson says.
With filming just starting there isn’t a clear time of when the movie is set to be released. Charisma News will keep you updated as we hear more information. {eoa}
