In the early 1970s, she and her husband Keith Godchaux joined the Grateful Dead, contributing to landmark albums such as “Europe ’72,” “Blues for Allah,” and “From The Mars Hotel.” The couple famously performed at the Great Pyramid in Egypt, a first for the location. After leaving the band in 1979, tragedy struck when Keith passed away in an automobile accident a year later.
Returning to Alabama, Donna Jean reportedly remained active in music and Christian ministry, according to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, releasing a solo CD in 1997 titled “Donna Jean.” She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994 and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2016.
According to AOL, a statement on her death noted: “She was a sweet and warmly beautiful spirit, and all those who knew her are united in loss.”
