Throughout the Bible, we see numerous references to God healing sickness, disease and infirmity. However, it is important to know that God’s ability to heal was not just something which happened in the days of the Bible. God still heals today, and He wants you to be healed and whole in every area of your life. There isn’t one area of your life where God doesn’t want to see you healed. In fact, Isaiah prophesied concerning Jesus over 300 years before His birth that He would come to heal all our infirmities.
“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5, KJV).
This promise was so significant that the apostle Peter echoes the same words to the church of the Diaspora in 1 Peter 2:24.
“Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Pet. 2:24).
We’ve learned that whenever God repeats something in Scripture, it’s worth taking the time to listen attentively. Interestingly enough, the apostles echo the same sentiments in Acts 4:12: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
The word “saved” used by the writer of Acts 4:12 is a translation of the Greek word sozo. This word is defined as “to save one from perishing, i.e. one suffering from disease, to make well, heal, restore to health.” Therefore, a benefit of salvation is Jesus’ prophetic promise to bring healing and deliverance in every area of our lives.
God is not a respecter of persons, and you can rest assured that if He did it for others, He will do it for you. Valora is a living witness of the healing power of Jesus. In 2007, the doctors gave her up to die, but she trusted God for her healing, and today, 12 years later, she is healed, healthy and whole. Not only did God heal Valora, but He has allowed us to see numerous other healings along our journey.
One healing in particular that we remember happened during one of our mission trips to Bogota, Columbia. We were in the mountains in a small city named Cabrera and two ladies came to our service on the first night. Both had been diagnosed with tumors and would soon need to undergo operations to remove them. Valora prayed for them both, and a year later, when we returned, we received the testimony that they had both been healed by her prayer.
This testimony is but one of many. God’s word declares in James that if there are sick among us that we can call for the elders of the church, and they can anoint the sick, pray and God will heal them. This is yet another Scripture that declares the promise of the Lord concerning healing those who are sick:
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: 15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5:14-16).
