Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton surprised the media by praising the late Rep. Elijah Cummings at his funeral as someone who stood up to Jezebel in our nation. Some interpreted her comments as a subtle shot at President Donald Trump.
In her speech, Clinton said Cummings lived up to his namesake, the prophet Elijah of the Old Testament.
“It is no coincidence, is it, that Elijah Cummings shared a name with an Old Testament prophet, whose name meant in Hebrew ‘The Lord is my God’ and who used the power and the wisdom that God gave Him to uphold the moral law that all people are subject to—and because of it, all people are equal,” Clinton said. “Like the prophet, our Elijah could call down fire from heaven. But he also prayed and worked for healing. He weathered storms and earthquakes, but never lost his faith.”
Clinton’s next line drew a loud round of laughter and applause from the crowd: “Like that Old Testament prophet, he stood against the corrupt leadership of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. And he looked out for the vulnerable among us. He lifted up the next generation of leaders. He even worked a few miracles.”
But not everyone was a fan of Clinton’s biblical references. In fact, some believers found Clinton’s speech prophetically ironic, since several have likened her and her unbiblical values to the ancient Queen Jezebel, who hunted the prophet Elijah when he spoke the word of the Lord.
In his New York Times’ bestselling book The Paradigm, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn points out amazing parallels between Clinton and Jezebel. Interestingly, The Paradigm shared the Top 5 New York Times ranking with Clinton’s memoir What Happened.
For instance, Jezebel was raised under the worship of the goddess Ashtoreth and, as a result, was a strong advocate of female power. Similarly, Clinton has been a lifelong advocate of radical feminism. Jezebel also championed Baal worship, which involved offering up children as sacrifices. In the name of feminism, Clinton has championed abortion—to the point that Planned Parenthood voted her the “chief advocate of abortion.”
Beyond the parallels in their values, Cahn also discovered parallels in their life events. Jezebel, for example, married Ahab, the king of Israel, a religiously conservative nation. Clinton married Bill Clinton, the governor of Arkansas, which is a conservative state in the U.S. Bible Belt. After becoming queen, Jezebel worked with her husband to overturn conservative values in Israel. Likewise, the Clintons worked together to overturn traditional conservative values in America.
If you read the story of Ahab and Jezebel in 1 Kings, you will see that their entire reign was marked by personal scandal. And if you know your recent American history, you will recall that scandal has tainted both Clintons’ careers. You may remember Bill’s sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky and his subsequent impeachment as well as the Whitewater controversy, which involved suspicious real estate investments.
To make the situation even more interesting, Cahn also found fascinating parallels between Jehu—the God-appointed man who eventually killed Jezebel—and Trump, who defeated Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.
Just when it seemed that the house of Ahab and Jezebel would endure indefinitely, God raised up Jehu. Jehu wasn’t a politician. He was by nature wild, impulsive and unpredictable with a fighter’s spirit that would shake the political world.
Similarly, when it seemed as though the Clintons’ reign would continue as Hillary won the presidency, God raised up Trump. Trump, too, was not a politician. He was a businessman—a natural, wild, impulsive, unpredictable businessman who would shake the political world.
Just as Jehu and Jezebel’s showdown resulted in Jezebel’s fall, so did Trump and Clinton’s race result in Clinton’s downfall.
On the day Clinton was to receive the nomination to come against Trump for the presidency—as in Jezebel’s showdown against Jehu—a speech was given at the Democratic convention hailing her. In the speech, one line was repeated over and over: “They threw her down.” If you Google the speech, you may find 2 Kings 9, which recounts Jezebel’s and Jehu’s showdown and foreshadows the downfall of Clinton as the modern-day American Jezebel.
