President Donald Trump is preparing to make a major change to America’s longstanding military relationship with Israel, announcing plans to cut approximately $4 billion in annual assistance to the Jewish state. However, there’s a significant distinction in this decision: America isn’t walking away from Israel, and the weapons aren’t going anywhere.
According to The Associated Press, Trump revealed during a Tuesday, Nov. 3, interview with Fox News that the United States would stop providing annual military assistance to Israel beginning in 2027, while continuing to sell American weapons and defense equipment to the nation.
And in a surprising twist, Trump says the idea didn’t originate in Washington.
“You can consider it barter. You can consider military aid or cash,” Trump said, according to the AP. “Look, we give them $4 billion of things and money, and they don’t need it. And I was approached by Bibi Netanyahu, and we’ve been talking about it for a couple of years because it’s a lot of money.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office had not immediately responded to the announcement.
The proposed shift would mark a significant departure from the financial arrangement that has helped sustain Israel’s defense capabilities for decades.
Under a 2016 agreement reached during former President Barack Obama’s administration, the United States committed $38 billion in security assistance to Israel over 10 years. Much of that money was intended for American-made military equipment, making the arrangement consequential for both Israel’s defense and the U.S. weapons industry.
American military assistance also surged following Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Research cited by the AP estimates that the United States provided at least $21.7 billion in military assistance to Israel in the aftermath of the attack.
