A devastating fire has left an Ohio congregation without a place to worship, and the circumstances surrounding the blaze are raising troubling questions about what happened inside the church just hours before it went up in flames.

According to ABC 6 On Your Side, firefighters responded to the flames at Columbus United Baptist Church near Taylor Road around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29. Crews spent nearly two hours battling the fire, which devastated the building that had stood since 1974.

However, the destruction followed Pastor Jimmy Thompson and his wife, Beverly, after they discovered evidence of a possible break-in on Wednesday afternoon.

The couple arrived to install a water softener, but noticed a broken window and water running down the church’s front steps. Inside, the lights were on, and empty soda cans were scattered across the floor.

The Thompsons contacted the police, but hours later, they received the unthinkable news: Their church was burning.

“We get this call that the church is on fire,” Thompson said. “I had to have the lady on the other end of the phone tell me twice, because it would not register what she was saying, because it couldn’t be true.”

With the building severely damaged, the congregation now faces the challenge of finding somewhere to worship. Thompson said it could take a year before they can return.

Yet amid the destruction, something caught her attention: a single white flower blooming outside the church.

While similar flowers grew elsewhere on the property, Thompson said this particular bloom stood out to her as a reminder that life remained amid the devastation.

“I thought, okay, that is a sign there is life here. God is sending us that this is where we are supposed to stay,” she told ABC 6.

And perhaps that single flower offers a powerful reminder of 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: God’s people may be struck down, but they are not destroyed.

A building may be reduced to ashes, but the fire cannot consume the faith of a church determined to stand on God’s promises.
