Greg Laurie Reveals 3 Things Christians Must Know About the Demonic Realm

Spiritual warfare is not imaginary, and according to Pastor Greg Laurie, Christians would be foolish to pretend the enemy is not actively looking for opportunities to destroy.

In a powerful message, Laurie laid out what he described as the demonic agenda, warning believers that demons seek both to hinder the purposes of God and to extend the power and influence of Satan.

“The purpose of demons seems to be twofold,” Laurie said. “Number one, they seek to hinder the purposes of God. And number two, they seek to extend the power of Satan.”

But Laurie’s message was not designed to leave Christians terrified of demonic powers. Instead, he highlighted three realities believers need to understand about the spiritual battle happening around them.

1. Demons Are Real and Aggressive

First, Laurie said demons are “real and aggressive.”

Pointing to Satan’s appearance in the book of Job and the biblical picture of the devil prowling the earth, Laurie warned that Satan is continually searching for opportunities to bring destruction. First Peter 5 describes the devil as a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.

That reality, Laurie said, is exactly why believers must take the Bible’s command to put on the full armor of God seriously.

2. Demonic Power Has Clear Limitations

Christians should not make the mistake of giving Satan more power than he actually possesses.

“Though powerful, the devil and his demons have clear limitations,” Laurie said. “Let me tell you something that Satan does not want you to know. His power is considerable, but it is still limited.”

Using Revelation 9 as an example, Laurie noted that even the terrifying demonic forces described during the tribulation operate within boundaries God has established. They are not sovereign. They do not possess unlimited authority. And they certainly are not equal to God.

For the believer, this distinction matters.

Laurie said that Christians belong to Christ and are under His authority, stressing that the devil cannot simply operate as he pleases in the life of someone who belongs to Jesus.

3. Demons Flee at the Name of Jesus Christ

Laurie’s third point delivered the ultimate blow to the enemy’s agenda: “Demons flee at the name of Jesus Christ.”

Laurie pointed to the biblical account of the demon-possessed man whose demons identified themselves as “Legion.” Even this multitude of demons recognized Christ’s authority and pleaded with Him concerning what would happen to them.

“Jesus is more powerful than the devil,” Laurie said. “Jesus is more powerful than any demon.”

That is where the message of spiritual warfare must ultimately lead.

Christians should not be ignorant of Satan’s schemes, but neither should they become obsessed with or terrified by them. The enemy may prowl, tempt, deceive and destroy, but he is not sitting on the throne.

Jesus is.
