A heartbreaking double cancer battle is unfolding within the family of Pope Leo XIV, as the pontiff recovers from lung cancer surgery. At the same time, his older brother fights a recurrence of a different form of the disease.

According to Reuters, Pope Leo, 71, underwent surgery Tuesday, Oct. 13, at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after doctors discovered a suspicious growth in his right lung.

During the approximately 90-minute procedure, surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. Tests confirmed lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.

Although the operation was successful, questions remain about whether the cancer has spread and whether additional treatments will be necessary.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday that the pope is recovering well, resuming a regular diet, walking and beginning respiratory exercises.

However, the pontiff is not the only member of his family confronting cancer.

According to CBS News, Pope Leo’s older brother, Louis Prevost, who lives in Florida, is battling multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer affecting plasma cells.

His wife, Deborah Prevost, told CBS News that Louis was initially diagnosed in 2017. Following treatment in 2019, including stem cell therapy and participation in a clinical trial, his cancer remained at very low levels.

But approximately three months ago, Louis experienced a relapse.

He is now participating in another clinical trial as the family navigates this difficult season.

Deborah also revealed that Pope Leo contacted his brother before Louis entered his latest clinical trial, informing the family about his own medical situation.

“We keep praying, keeping spirits up for both of them,” Deborah told CBS News.

As physicians continue evaluating their conditions, the Prevost family’s experience serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of prayer, perseverance and hope in the face of life’s most difficult battles.
