A religious liberty showdown is erupting in Dearborn, Michigan, and at the center of the fight is one explosive question: Is the city celebrating Islam while giving Christianity and Judaism the cold shoulder?

Journalist Margot Cleveland, who is the senior legal correspondent for The Federalist, has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Dearborn, including the town’s mayor, Abdullah Hammoud, accusing the city officials of unconstitutional religious favoritism and discrimination against Christians and Jews, according to Fox News Digital.

Cleveland’s concerns began with something seemingly simple: banners.

“I was picking up pizza in downtown Dearborn,” Cleveland told Fox News Digital. “When I went down the boulevard, up and down the street were ‘Ramadan Kareem’ … banners.”

But Cleveland noticed something else. Easter and Passover were quickly approaching, yet she said there were no comparable public displays recognizing the Christian and Jewish holy days.

That observation launched what has now become a federal constitutional battle.

Cleveland says she began questioning city officials about the discrepancy and eventually filed Freedom of Information Act requests. According to Fox News, her investigation uncovered additional Islamic-themed decorations and Ramadan merchandise bearing the Dearborn Police Department’s seal.

Earlier Fox News reporting found city records showing approximately $6,500 was spent on Ramadan banners and a crescent moon display.

Yet Cleveland says her goal has never been to strip Ramadan from Dearborn’s streets.

“I have not asked the city not to celebrate Ramadan,” she told Fox News Digital. “What I’ve asked is that the city treat Christians and Jews equally.”

That’s the heart of the fight.

Cleveland proposed Easter and Passover banners, crosses and Stars of David so Christians and Jews could receive the same kind of public recognition. Instead, she alleges city leaders ignored her concerns while expanding Ramadan displays.

The American Freedom Law Center filed the lawsuit Sept. 17 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, alleging violations of Cleveland’s First and 14th Amendment rights.

“My beef is with the mayor and the people running the city who are discriminating against Christians and Jews,” she said.

What happens next in Dearborn could carry implications far beyond a few banners hanging from city streets.
