Caleb Flynn invoked God, broke down while speaking to his daughters and continued to insist he did not murder his wife, Ashley, moments before a judge sentenced the former worship pastor to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Flynn, 40, was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole after a jury convicted him last week of aggravated murder and other charges in Ashley’s killing.

“I have unfortunately lied about a lot of things over the last couple of years, but as I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” Flynn told the courtroom, according to NewsNation. “I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to,” he continued.

He also spoke to his daughters, who he said he had dreams of seeing them “grow up to be mighty women of God.”

Flynn’s daughters had words for their father as well. One wrote that he “chose to kill the only mother I ever had,” and begged that he would repent, saying that she prays everyday for him to “tell the truth.”

His other daughter stated that the “least you can do is tell everyone you did it and receive your outcome.”

When Charisma first reported on Flynn’s arrest, authorities accused the former worship pastor and “American Idol” contestant of killing Ashley and attempting to stage the scene to look like a home invasion.

Months later, as Flynn’s trial began, the case carried an almost unthinkable contrast. During his 2013 “American Idol” appearance, Flynn had publicly spoken about his Christian faith and his love for Ashley, the woman who encouraged him to chase his musical dreams.

Then the trial exposed what prosecutors said had been happening behind closed doors.

As Charisma previously reported, prosecutors presented more than 100,000 messages exchanged between Flynn and Alleigha Botner, with whom prosecutors said he was having an affair. Among the messages presented to jurors was Flynn allegedly saying that if he could kill Ashley without going to hell, he would do it.

The sentencing comes less than a week after Charisma reported Flynn was found guilty on all nine counts following roughly two and a half hours of jury deliberations.

Through every stage of this case, from the allegations and haunting messages to the guilty verdict and now a life sentence, there remains a family carrying a loss no courtroom ruling can undo.

Long before the verdict arrived, Ashley’s family remembered her through Charisma’s earlier coverage as a woman whose life was marked by faith, joy and a deep love for Jesus and her children.

Flynn may have invoked God as his “ultimate judge” while maintaining his innocence, but an earthly jury has rendered its verdict and a judge has handed down his punishment.

For Ashley’s daughters, however, this story does not end with a sentence. They now must continue forward without their mother and with their father spending the rest of his life behind bars. Pray for these children to be comforted and guided by God’s Holy Spirit during this incredibly tragic time in their lives.
