Artificial intelligence may promise to change the world, but King Charles III is asking a far more sobering question: What happens if humanity can no longer control what it creates?
Speaking directly to some of the most powerful figures shaping the AI revolution, Charles warned Thursday that the technology’s rapidly expanding capabilities could carry consequences far beyond productivity, convenience or innovation.
According to Reuters, the king gathered leaders from OpenAI, Nvidia, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic at his Dumfries House estate in Scotland as the global debate over AI safety intensifies.
And Charles did not mince words about the stakes.

“There seems urgency in adequately considering the existential dangers of such technologies falling into the wrong hands, and being used in potentially catastrophic ways,” Charles said, according to Reuters.
Then came the question hanging over the entire AI race:
“Surely we need sufficient means of control before it is all too late?”
Charles acknowledged the extraordinary good AI could accomplish, particularly within medicine and the life sciences. But he also pointed to warnings coming from the very people creating these technologies, noting concerns that increasingly advanced AI could develop “darker capacities,” potentially even the ability “to take life.”
Those warnings are no longer confined to science-fiction scenarios.
Recently, Charisma reported that a former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher warned that rapid AI advancement could potentially lead to human extinction.
Sitting in the room as Charles delivered his warning were Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis, OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar, Anthropic Chief Global Affairs Officer Tino Cuéllar and British AI Minister Kanishka Narayan.
Also present was Paolo Benanti, an adviser to Pope Leo XIV.
AI may be advancing at breathtaking speed, but the question Charles posed to its architects is one humanity cannot afford to ignore: Will technology remain a tool in human hands, or will humanity eventually discover it has built something it can no longer contain?
