What was supposed to be a one-night journey through Olympic National Park ended in tragedy.

The body of 26-year-old Neil Gehring was recovered Sept. 13 after search-and-rescue teams spent nearly two weeks looking for him in Washington’s Olympic National Park, according to KOMO News.

Gehring left the Madison Falls Trailhead on Aug. 31, planning an overnight cross-country traverse from Boulder Lake toward Appleton Pass. When he failed to return, he was reported overdue on Sept. 2, KOMO reported.

Search efforts eventually focused on the northwest slope of Mount Appleton. Then came a critical development: Additional cell phone location data helped searchers narrow their efforts and ultimately locate Gehring.

KOMO reported that his body was recovered nearly two weeks after he disappeared.

Yet one critical question remains: What happened to him?

According to the Peninsula Daily News, Gehring’s remains were brought to the Clallam County Coroner’s Office. Authorities had not publicly released further information explaining the circumstances surrounding his death at the time of the report.

For Gehring’s loved ones, this is more than another tragic headline. A 26-year-old man left for an overnight adventure and never came home.

Now is a time to pray.

Pray for the Lord’s supernatural comfort and peace to surround Gehring’s family and friends as they walk through tremendous grief. Pray also for wisdom and strength for those investigating his death.

As Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.”

May that promise become especially real for everyone mourning Neil Gehring today.
