What if archaeologists uncovered a place where Jesus Himself may have opened the Scriptures and taught nearly 2,000 years ago?
On the shores of the Sea of Galilee, the ancient city of Magdala is revealing a remarkable window into the world of Christ—and one mysterious discovery sitting at the center of an ancient synagogue continues to leave researchers with questions.
During a TBN Biblical Archaeology visit to Magdala, host Erick Stakelbeck joined archaeologist Danny “The Digger” Herman to explore the ancient community traditionally associated with Mary Magdalene. Located along the Sea of Galilee, Magdala stood in the heart of the region where Jesus carried out much of His earthly ministry.
But in 2009, archaeologists stumbled upon something extraordinary.
A team excavating a site where a hotel was expected to be built uncovered a first-century synagogue. According to Herman, the discovery quickly attracted international attention because of one staggering possibility: Jesus may have entered this very building and taught there.
Standing inside the ancient synagogue, Stakelbeck seemed overwhelmed by the place’s significance.
“Danny, it’s hard to take it all in,” Stakelbeck said. “Not only archaeology, this is spiritual.”
That possibility becomes even more compelling because ancient Magdala did not remain a thriving community for centuries afterChrist. Herman explained that the city was eventually devastated during the Roman period and buried beneath debris, leaving its first-century remains hidden until archaeologists brought them back to light.
Then there is the mystery sitting inside the synagogue itself.

Archaeologists discovered an elaborate carved stone covered with symbols that researchers still cannot completely explain. Herman said the menorah depicted on the stone can be clearly identified, but the meaning of the remaining imagery—and even the stone’s exact purpose—remains uncertain.
“This is still a big mystery,” Herman said. “We still don’t know for sure what all of these symbols represented.”
One theory, Herman explained, suggests the stone may have served as the base of a pedestal used for reading the Torah. If so, the discovery paints a remarkable picture of Jewish worship in Galilee during the generation when Jesus traveled through the region and taught in synagogues.
The archaeological evidence surrounding the synagogue adds another layer to the story.
Researchers uncovered mosaic floors, paved homes, an organized urban layout and Jewish ritual baths, suggesting Magdala was a prosperous community rather than simply an impoverished fishing village. Some of its roughly 2,000-year-old mikva’ot, or ritual baths, still fill with water.
Then everything changed.
Around A.D. 67-68, Roman forces descended on the area. Herman said residents tried to defend the city, even reusing synagogue components to narrow the streets as makeshift defenses. Residents ultimately fled toward the Sea of Galilee, where Herman described a brutal Roman pursuit. Magdala would never return to what it had been.
For nearly 2,000 years, much of that world remained buried.
Now, stone by stone, it is coming back into view.
The discoveries at Magdala give believers something extraordinary: a physical glimpse into the first-century Galilee where the gospel accounts unfolded.
These aren’t merely ruins from some forgotten civilization. They are remnants of the world in which Jesus walked, taught and transformed lives.
The stones may have been silent for 2,000 years, but today they are pointing back to a biblical world that was very real—and may still have more secrets waiting beneath the earth.
