More than two decades after Sept. 11, 2001, the smoke has long since cleared from Lower Manhattan. But according to Jonathan Cahn, the spiritual mystery that emerged from Ground Zero never did.
Long before “The Harbinger” became a publishing phenomenon, Cahn believed something buried in the events of 9/11 went far beyond geopolitics. What began with a fallen tree at Ground Zero eventually led him down a trail connecting ancient Israel, Isaiah 9:10, America’s founding, and a series of eerie parallels he came to call the “harbingers.”
And according to Cahn, their purpose was not merely to reveal a mystery. They were sounding an alarm.
Cahn described how the mystery began when he stood at the edge of Ground Zero and noticed the remains of a fallen sycamore. As Charisma previously reported, he felt compelled to investigate what he had seen.
That seemingly ordinary tree became anything but ordinary in Cahn’s research.
The trail led him to ancient Israel and Isaiah 9:10, a passage describing a nation responding defiantly after an enemy attack rather than turning back to God. From there emerged the framework that would become “The Harbinger.”
In a 2011 Charisma article, Cahn laid out the disturbing parallel. Ancient Israel suffered a devastating enemy attack that served as a wake-up call, yet instead of repentance, its leaders responded in defiance. Cahn argued that America experienced a similar national shaking on 9/11—and that the ancient harbingers subsequently began appearing on American soil.
One of the most striking connections centers on Isaiah 9:10.

Cahn pointed to words spoken by American political leaders following 9/11 that echoed the ancient declaration of Israel: rather than bowing in humility after destruction, the nation would rebuild stronger than before. For Cahn, this wasn’t simply an interesting biblical coincidence. It fit into a much larger prophetic pattern.
Then there is Ground Zero itself.
In “America in the Balance: Revival or Judgment?”, Cahn highlighted another layer of the mystery: Lower Manhattan’s connection to America’s beginnings. George Washington took the presidential oath of office in New York City in 1789, and the new government subsequently gathered for prayer at St. Paul’s Chapel. Cahn connected that history to Ground Zero, noting that the chapel survived the devastation of 9/11 while the nearby sycamore absorbed debris from the collapsing towers.
For Cahn, the convergence was staggering: America’s beginnings, a biblical warning, an enemy attack, a fallen sycamore and words spoken by national leaders all appeared to intersect.
Yet “The Harbinger” was never meant to end on Sept. 11.
Writing for Charisma in 2020, Cahn explained that he viewed 9/11 as the beginning of a prophetic template rather than its conclusion. He called it the first “shaking,” arguing that a nation given a warning must ultimately choose what it will do with it. As Cahn explained, the mystery continued to unfold as America moved further from God rather than experiencing the sweeping national repentance he believed the shaking was intended to provoke.
That is what makes the message behind “The Harbinger” more sobering than the mysteries themselves.
The trees, towers, ancient Scriptures and remarkable parallels may capture attention, but Cahn has repeatedly emphasized that the ultimate point is not fascination with judgment.
It is repentance.
“The purpose of the harbingers is not to condemn a nation to judgment, but to warn it to the aim of salvation, redemption and revival,” Cahn wrote in 2012.
That distinction may be more important now than ever.
If Cahn’s interpretation is correct, then the question left behind by “The Harbinger” isn’t simply whether ancient mysteries manifested around 9/11. The far more urgent question is whether America ever truly responded to the warning.
Twenty-five years after the day that changed the nation, the mystery still points back to the same choice: repentance or rebellion, revival or continued shaking.
The alarm sounded.
The question is whether America is listening.
