A mysterious collection of ancient stones known as the “Devil’s Arrows” has just surrendered one of its secrets. What scientists discovered, however, may raise an even bigger question about the ancient world.
New research has determined that prehistoric builders transported enormous stones weighing roughly 25 tons each at least 11 miles across Yorkshire, England, to construct what is now Britain’s tallest surviving prehistoric stone row.
According to the Daily Mail, researchers from Curtin University and the University of York traced the massive stones near Boroughbridge back to Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire. The three surviving monoliths stand up to 23 feet tall and are believed to have been erected during the Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age.
Using mineral “fingerprinting,” researchers determined the stones did not arrive through glacial movement. Ancient people intentionally transported them across the landscape, bypassing closer sources of suitable stone.
“We have now proved that Neolithic communities moved several 25-tonne stones 18km across Yorkshire,” University of York archaeologist Dr. Jim Leary said, calling the undertaking an “epic quest to create a sacred landscape.”
But researchers still don’t know one thing: precisely how they did it.

Researcher L.A. Marzulli has long challenged conventional explanations surrounding enormous ancient megaliths. Even the monument’s name carries an eerie spiritual legend. According to the University of York, local folklore claimed the devil hurled giant stone arrows from How Hill toward Boroughbridge, where they landed and remained.
Science has now given us a much different explanation for where the stones came from.
Perhaps the greater mystery is what ancient humanity knew—and how much of that knowledge has been lost to history.
