Wake Up, America: Abdul El-Sayed’s Own Words Reveal a Dangerous Threat to the Second Amendment

America’s constitutional freedoms do not disappear overnight. They disappear when Americans elect leaders who view those freedoms as obstacles standing between government and greater control.

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s own words should concern every American who believes the Constitution means what it says.

According to reporting from The Post Millennial, El-Sayed responded to the 2023 Covenant School massacre by attacking America’s gun rights and dismissing the importance of shooter Audrey Hale’s transgender identity and violent ideology.

“School shootings are not a trans problem, school shootings are a gun problem,” El-Sayed said. He went further, claiming the problem is that “almost anyone can get any gun anytime and take it anywhere, like a school.”

That is not an accurate description of American gun laws. Federal and state restrictions already govern firearm purchases, possession and prohibited persons, arguably far more than the Founding Fathers ever intended.

But the greater red flag is El-Sayed’s reported position on the Second Amendment itself. The Post Millennial reports that he argued the Second Amendment should instead concern a right to health care rather than the right to bear arms.

Read the Constitution.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,” the Second Amendment declares, “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

There is nothing ambiguous about health care hidden between those words.

This Is Bigger Than One Candidate

Americans must understand what is at stake when politicians seeking federal power openly reject the original protections they would swear an oath to defend.

The danger is not simply another gun-control proposal. It is a political philosophy that treats constitutional rights as privileges government can reinterpret, restrict or replace.

That thinking runs directly against the founding principle of limited government. The Bill of Rights does not grant Americans freedoms at Washington’s pleasure. It restricts what Washington can do to Americans.

History repeatedly shows where authoritarian ideologies, including Marxist regimes, lead when government power becomes supreme and individual liberty becomes subordinate to the state.

This is why Americans need to wake up.

Today it may be the Second Amendment. Tomorrow it can be freedom of speech, religious liberty, due process or another protection inconvenient to those wielding power.

Once those are gone, what is stopping people like El-Sayed or New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from instituting Sharia Law in America?

If you don’t think that is possible, just look at what is happening in Texas and what has already happened in Dearborn, Michigan.

We do not preserve liberty by assuming politicians will voluntarily restrain themselves. The Founders understood that.

That is precisely why they enshrined the restraints in our founding documents.
