Could one of the world’s next great earthquakes carry prophetic significance?

Perry Stone says a startling experience during an extended period of prayer left him convinced that a massive earthquake is coming.

Stone described spending an entire day seeking the Lord before experiencing what he called a spiritual vision. He was not asleep. Instead, with his eyes closed, Stone says a map suddenly appeared before him.

“I saw a map,” Stone said. “Now, I cannot tell you where the map was.”

Stone wondered whether what he was seeing could have been somewhere along the Ring of Fire, the vast region surrounding the Pacific Ocean known for intense seismic activity. However, he carefully emphasized that he could not definitively identify the location.

Then came the part of the experience that shocked him.

“I heard the words ‘9.0 earthquake,'” Stone said.

Stone described the words as something he heard spiritually rather than through an audible voice. The experience was powerful enough that he says he immediately opened his eyes.

“I am convinced just by this experience that there’s coming an earthquake that’s either a 9.0 or more,” Stone said. “It’ll be along a coastal area.”

Stone also believes such an event could potentially unleash a devastating tsunami. However, he made an important distinction: He did not claim that “tsunami” was part of what he heard during the experience. Rather, that was his own conclusion as he contemplated what a magnitude 9.0 earthquake near a coastline could mean.

Yet Stone’s message goes beyond the possibility of a natural disaster. He points believers directly back to the words of Jesus.

In Matthew 24, Jesus warned His disciples that the period leading toward His return would be marked by wars, rumors of wars, famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places. Jesus described these events as the beginning of birth pains.

Stone believes Christians should be paying attention.

He also pointed to Joel 2 and its description of “blood, fire and pillars of smoke” before the day of the Lord, connecting the biblical imagery with his discussion of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Scripture does not give believers permission to live in fear when the earth shakes. It tells them to watch.

That distinction matters.

Prophetic warnings are not supposed to produce panic among God’s people. They should drive the church toward prayer, discernment and a deeper awareness that this world is temporary and Christ’s words are trustworthy.

That is precisely what Stone is asking Christians to do.

“When you pray, I want you to ask the Lord to protect as many people as possible wherever such an event might occur,” Stone said.

Stone encouraged believers to remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit, particularly if they suddenly experience an unusual burden to pray.

“Stay alert, stay in prayer.”

In an hour when the headlines can change in an instant and creation itself appears increasingly unsettled, those may be words the church cannot afford to ignore.
