On Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, thousands of Shia Muslims marched through the streets of Dearborn in the city’s annual Arbaeen procession, a religious event marking the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. What organizers and local media described as a peaceful expression of faith turned violent for one Christian activist who dared to speak the name of Jesus nearby.

Jake Lang, a well-known Christian and conservative activist (and January 6 defendant who received a presidential pardon), arrived near the procession route with a megaphone. He proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ and voiced support for immigration enforcement, including ICE. Within moments, according to video footage he and others posted, a crowd of young Muslim men swarmed him.

Lang later shared what he said was police drone footage depicting objects thrown in his direction. He has filed a $200 million federal lawsuit against the Dearborn Police Department, the city council, and Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, alleging failure to protect, assault, and violations of his First and Fourteenth Amendment rights.

Amy Mek, founder and editor-in-chief of RAIR Foundation, described the broader scene at the march as an Islamic invasion:

45,000 ‘SOLDIERS’ JUST TOOK OVER THE STREETS OF DEARBORN
Tens of thousands flooded Michigan this weekend in a massive Islamic procession – black flags, Arabic chants, Hezbollah-linked imagery – a scene ripped straight out of the Middle East. This isn’t a cultural festival.
It’s a victory parade. A living reminder that Dearborn has already been conquered without a single shot fired. While the streets belong to the new majority, Christians and Jews are reduced to second-class citizens in their own city – told they’re ‘not welcome,’ ignored when they complain about discrimination, and left unprotected. And our federal government? Turning a blind eye. This is what demographic conquest looks like when no one stops it.

The Arbaeen procession, organized largely by Iraqi-American Shia leaders, began at the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center and proceeded roughly 1.2 miles along Greenfield Road to Ford Woods Park. Participants, many dressed in black, carried religious banners and flags (including some American flags this year) while chanting in honor of Hussein.

This episode raises serious questions about equal protection under the law. A man exercising his constitutional right to free speech—proclaiming the name of Jesus on a public street in an American city—was met with physical violence while police, by the available video evidence, appeared unable or unwilling to immediately disperse the crowd or detain the perpetrators. No charges against the attackers have been publicly announced as of Monday.

Critics of Lang call him a provocateur seeking confrontation. Supporters, including other Christian and free-speech advocates, see the response as evidence of a growing double standard: large-scale Islamic religious processions proceed with official accommodation, while Christian witness or criticism of immigration policy in the same city risks mob violence with little apparent consequence.

Lang’s lawsuit will now test whether Dearborn authorities will be held accountable for protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of the religious or political content of their speech. In a nation founded on religious liberty, the spectacle of a Christian being assaulted for naming Jesus while authorities stand by demands more than silence.
