Nostradamus, Ancient Prophecies and the Bible: What Christians Need to Know About the Future

The History Channel’s Ancient Aliens episode “Prophecies from the Stars” explores one of humanity’s oldest fascinations: the desire to know the future.

From Nostradamus and the Oracle of Delphi to the Mayan calendar and ancient prophecies surrounding the end of the age, the episode examines how civilizations throughout history have sought answers to life’s biggest questions. Where are we headed? Is history moving toward a specific destination? And can anyone truly see what lies ahead?

The program presents a variety of theories, including the possibility that certain prophetic figures may have accessed knowledge beyond ordinary human understanding. Some researchers featured in the episode suggest this information may have come through altered states of consciousness, hidden dimensions or even contact with nonhuman intelligences.

The episode ultimately highlights something undeniable: Humanity has always been searching for answers about the future.

That search is not new.

In fact, the Bible reveals that God Himself has placed eternity in the hearts of men (Eccl. 3:11). Throughout Scripture, we see people longing to understand God’s plans, His purposes and what lies ahead.

Yet while many ancient traditions looked to stars, oracles, mystical experiences or hidden knowledge, the Bible points to a very different source of truth.

The Scriptures teach that God alone knows the end from the beginning. Isaiah 46:10 declares that He is the One “declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done.”

Prophecy is not ultimately about predicting future events. It is about revealing God’s purposes and pointing people toward Him.

This is where the biblical worldview differs from many of the theories explored in the episode.

The Bible acknowledges the existence of supernatural realities. Scripture contains accounts of angels, visions, dreams and prophetic revelation. At the same time, believers are repeatedly instructed to exercise discernment.

The apostle John writes, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1).

This does not mean Christians should fear the supernatural. Rather, it means they should carefully evaluate every claim against the truth of God’s Word.

One of the most compelling aspects of “Prophecies from the Stars” is its demonstration of humanity’s enduring desire to understand what comes next. From ancient Persia and Greece to the Maya and modern culture, people continue asking the same questions they have asked for thousands of years.

But while civilizations have looked to countless sources for answers, the Christian faith points to one ultimate source of truth: Jesus Christ.

The world’s fascination with prophecy will likely never disappear. Neither will humanity’s desire to understand the future.

Yet the greatest hope found in Scripture is not that we can know every detail of tomorrow. It is that we can know the One who holds tomorrow in His hands.
