US Blockade of Strait of Hormuz Triggers Oil Surge, Global Tensions After Iran Standoff

The United States launched a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz at 10 a.m. ET Monday, escalating tensions in the Middle East after peace talks with Tehran collapsed over the weekend. The blockade places one of the world’s most critical oil routes under direct U.S. control, with at least 17 American vessels deployed in the region.

According to Fox News, U.S. Central Command issued a stark warning to global shipping earlier Monday. “Any vessel entering or departing the blockaded area without authorization is subject to interception, diversion, and capture,” the notice said.

Iran immediately condemned the move as “piracy” and vowed to respond with force, raising fears of a wider conflict and the end of a fragile ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voiced full support for President Donald Trump’s decision, confirming close coordination between Israel and the United States following the collapse of talks in Pakistan on Sunday.

“Since Iran violated the rules, President Trump decided to place a naval blockade on them. We of course support this firm position, and we are coordinated with the United States all the time,” Netanyahu said.

Markets reacted instantly. Oil prices surged past $100 per barrel Monday as investors braced for supply disruptions tied to the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global energy shipments. Analysts warned Americans could feel immediate pressure at the gas pump as the crisis unfolds.

Speaking Sunday after stepping off Air Force One in Maryland, Donald Trump framed the blockade as both a military and economic turning point. “Their military is destroyed,” he said. “Their whole Navy is underwater. You know that 158 ships are gone. Their navy is gone.”

Trump then previewed the timing of the operation. “At 10 tomorrow, we have a blockade going into effect. Other nations are working so that Iran will not be able to sell oil,” he said Sunday.

The president also pointed to shifting global energy flows. “There are many boats heading toward our country to fill up with oil and then go and take it,” he said Sunday.

At the same time, Trump delivered a sharp rebuke of NATO allies during his Sunday remarks. “But I’m very disappointed in NATO,” he said. “They weren’t there for us. We pay trillions of dollars for NATO, and they weren’t there for us.”
