Former President George Bush gave remarks about Cheney, his vice president for both terms, hailing him as a good pick for the job.
According to Newsweek, Bush stated that his father, George H.W. Bush, told him, “Son, you couldn’t pick a better man.”
“We talked over the various qualities I was looking for in a vice president,” Bush said, discussing how Cheney was helping him to select the perfect candidate. “Preparedness, mature judgment, rectitude and loyalty…I realized the best choice for the vice president was a man sitting right in front of me, and I told him that in such a moment.”
The former vice president’s daughter, Liz Cheney, also eulogized her father at the event.
“My dad’s devotion to America was deep and substantive,” Cheney said. “He knew you couldn’t truly appreciate what it means to live in freedom if you didn’t understand the sacrifices of the generations who came before.”
