When my children were very young, we had a hamster named Adam. When Adam died the children were heartbroken, so we had a funeral service for him and buried him in the flower garden.

The next day, I discovered my son, Jason, digging up the dead hamster. Surprised, I asked him, “What are you doing?”

Jason answered, “I wanted to see if he’s gone to heaven yet.”

Aunt Megan was 3-year-old Logan’s favorite relative. Once when she came to visit us, he rushed to her for a big hug. Then he took his Aunt Megan’s hand, turned to my husband, Jeff, and me, and said, “Look Daddy, Aunt Megan is wearing that green dress you said was made by Omar the Tentmaker!”

Derek was a little blond in my kindergarten class. One day he approached me, his blue eyes serious, and asked, “Miss Kayla, are you a Christian?”

“Why yes,” I answered, a little surprised at his inquiry. But because Derek was the son of a local minister, I imagined he had learned from his father that this was an important question. Then with mock seriousness, I asked, “Are you?”

“No,” he replied matter-of-factly, “we’re Baptist.”
