Divine Bodyguards

Proverbs 2:6-17 We witnessed in our church a dramatic conversion. A bodyguard for the Mafia was saved, and he shared with us some of his assignments as a bodyguard to Mafia leaders. He was charged to defend the Mafia leader with his own life. He was to check out where the Mafia leaders were to eat, sleep and travel to be sure there would be no way someone could get to that leader to do him harm. He stayed awake all night to guard the leader. This passage in Proverbs reveals several divine bodyguards we have as we walk in the path God sets before us. These bodyguards preserve our way and keep us from traveling on the path that leads to destruction.

Every day when I awaken I am conscious of these bodyguards. I know that if I acknowledge their presence and stick close with them all day, I will be protected from making mistakes that would bring destruction and disaster. God is a buckler to those who walk uprightly, but to walk uprightly daily we must look to these bodyguards. These bodyguards are:

  • WISDOM
  • KNOWLEDGE
  • UNDERSTANDING
  • DISCRETION
  • PRUDENCE

Five is the number of grace, and it is so comforting to know that we have five bodyguards on duty night and day to preserve, protect and keep us walking in God’s path of righteousness. All of these bodyguards are under the instruction of the Captain of the Heavenly Hosts—Jesus Christ.

Daily we have choices. Will we listen to these bodyguards when they warn us not to go down the dark path? We can listen to them daily as we search out God’s Word, because all of these bodyguards are found in God’s Word. Wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discretion and prudence will only be on duty in our lives if we have submitted to the instructions they give in God’s Word. Have you looked into the faces of your bodyguards today? God shines a light on their faces as we turn on the lamp of God’s Word every morning. Let this be your prayer this morning:

Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Help me to turn this lamp on today as I spend time in Your Word. Thank You for wisdom, knowledge, understanding, discretion and prudence, who will watch over me and keep me safe from the enemy who seeks my destruction. I will listen carefully as they instruct me today.
