Record Number of Americans, Including Republicans, Now Support Gay Marriage

Support for gay marriage has reached a record high of 70% in the United States, per a recent Gallup poll, and the increase stems largely from an increase in the number of Republicans (55%) approving what is quickly becoming a societal norm. This is the first time members of the GOP have shown majority support since Gallup began tracking these numbers in 1996.

“This latest figure marks an increase of 10 percentage points since 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that all states must recognize same-sex marriages,” the Gallup organization reports. The statistics come from its annual Values and Beliefs poll, conducted May 3-18.

Democrats have consistently supported legal same-sex marriage, and the current 83% level remains on track with previous levels of support. “This could suggest that support for gay marriage has reached a ceiling for this group, at least for now,” Gallup says. Support from political independents rose from a range of 68-71% (2017-2020) to a slightly higher 73% in the most recent poll.

Support for same-sex marriage also rose among all age groups, with 84% of young adults, 72% of middle-aged adults and 60% of older adults responding in affirmation of the trend. {eoa}
