Halloween has long been viewed as a day about costumes, candy and spooky decorations—but for Christians, participation carries serious spiritual risks. The Bible is clear: engaging in witchcraft, communicating with spirits or dabbling in the occult is forbidden. And Halloween, at its core, celebrates many of these very things.

“One of the main themes you see on Halloween is witchcraft,” Kathryn Krick warned. “You see witches, cauldrons, images of witches—and that’s not something to joke about or play with.” Witches and warlocks are not just harmless symbols. The Bible portrays them as vessels of demonic power, sent by the devil to torment people and open doors in the spiritual realm. “Demons come by witches and warlocks when someone opens a door in the spiritual realm. It’s like leaving your front door open—the demons see it and enter.”

This spiritual principle means that exposure to witchcraft, even casually, can have real consequences. “These demons are sent to steal, kill and destroy people. They are working to lead some to eternal hell,” Krick explained. This is why believers must take the presence of darkness seriously, instead of treating Halloween as harmless fun.

Despite the dangers, many believers underestimate Halloween, thinking it is simply entertainment. “When we are okay with Halloween, it sends a message that it’s harmless. That is dangerous,” Krick cautioned. Christians are called to be sons and daughters of light, completely set apart in the world. Participating in celebrations rooted in darkness undermines this calling.

Visual symbols matter as well. Ghosts, skeletons and witches are not just decorations—they represent forces of darkness that can influence the heart and mind. As Christians, ignoring this sends the wrong message, both to ourselves and to the world around us. “People who aren’t believers are watching us. When we treat these things casually, it communicates that it’s safe to embrace darkness.”

Halloween is not a neutral holiday. It is steeped in themes that oppose God’s kingdom. Christians are called to avoid it entirely—not just for personal protection, but also as a witness to the world of God’s light and holiness. The spiritual battle may be unseen, but it is real. Choosing to abstain from Halloween is a simple, yet powerful, way to honor God and guard against the darkness.
