Joni Eareckson Tada recently announced on Facebook that she is cancer-free. She called her good news “miraculous” and thanked her followers for their prayers and support.
Doctors diagnosed Tada—a long-term quadriplegic and founder of Joni and Friends—with breast cancer eight years ago. After she underwent treatment, doctors told her she was cancer-free. But several months ago, tests revealed that her cancer returned.
But now, Tada says a PET scan shows that the tumor doctors removed last November did not metastasize.
“We were prepared to gladly take whatever from the hand of God, even if it were from his left hand,” she wrote. “But the Lord was gracious and heard the desire of our hearts.”
Tada quoted Proverbs 25:25 (ESV), which says, “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.” That passage, she says, perfectly describes her and her husband, Ken, after receiving the doctor’s news.
“Given the aggressive nature of that reoccurring cancer, this news is quite miraculous,” she wrote. “So, THANK you for lifting us up before the Lord Jesus. For now, we have been spared of more cancer battles. We humbly realize that may well change in the future; but for now, we are rejoicing in those wonderful words from my medical oncologist: ‘all clear!'”
