Why You Should Ask God for the Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation

Revelation received from the Spirit of God always changes lives. You see, true faith is built on revelation because revelation shows who God is, who we are in Him and the authority we have been given as the children of God.

We see this in Matthew 16, when Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (see v. 15).

In this account, God revealed to Peter not only who Jesus was—”the Christ, the Son of the living God”—but also who Peter himself was and the authority God was giving to the church so we could make Him known in the earth.

Revelation is supernatural, and it is always transformational. This is why the Bible tells us in Ephesians 1:17 to pray that “the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give [us] the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him.”

My prayer is that as you journey through the next 100 days, God will give you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation. I wrote these devotionals in hope that the Father would use them to reveal His truth to you in a fresh way so that you can walk in the fullness of who God has called you to be and become a bold witness for Him in the earth.

I called my devotional book Rivers of Revelation because I believe that as you drink of God’s Word, out of your innermost being will flow rivers of living water. You will come to know God in a deeper way, and the revelation you glean will flow from you out to others as you share the truth.

Through revelation, we will walk in power. Through revelation, we are changed.

“Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2, NKJV).

One of the most foundational truths that has anchored me in God is the realization that I have been chosen. As a new believer in 1978, I looked around and wondered why I was the only Jewish person in my whole school, which had many Jews, who believed in Jesus. Then I realized that I believed because God had revealed Himself to me in a way that He had not revealed Himself to the other Jewish people in my school. I realized He had chosen me.

“He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the kind intention of His will” (Eph. 1:4-5, NASB).

In John 17, Jesus prayed for those whom the Father had given Him. And in John 6, Jesus said no one can come to Him unless it had been granted from the Father and that all whom the Father had given Him would come to Him (vv. 65, 37).

Beloved, it is an awesome blessing when you realize that you were personally and specifically chosen by God the Father before the foundation of the world. And because He chose you, He revealed Jesus to you, gave you faith and brought you to Himself. Even if your coming to faith wasn’t dramatic but happened slowly over time, you came to faith by the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit because the Father had chosen you even before you were born.

When you realize that the security of your relationship with the Father is based on His choice of you, you will know you are standing on solid ground. Jesus said in John 15, “You did not choose Me but I chose you” (v. 16). Taking hold of this truth will give you a confidence in your relationship with God that can come no other way.
