Proverbs 10:8-9 Recently I seemed to be hopelessly lost in a town that I knew nothing about. My only hope was to stop at a gas station to ask for directions. What a feeling of relief I had when I knew how to reach my destination. I knew the road signs and landmarks to watch for as I made each turn. Before I asked for directions, it seemed that every turn I made was wrong, and I was going further away from my destination instead of closer to it.

Life is a journey, and often we think we are on the right road only to find that we missed a turn somewhere and are going in the wrong direction. There is a proverb that says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end [the final destination] is the way of death” (Prov. 14:12).

Today’s proverb says the wise in heart receives commandments, and he that walks uprightly walks surely. The commandments of God are like that gas station where I finally received the correct directions. I had to listen carefully to the directions, and then I had to follow the signs and landmarks as I traveled to my destination. God’s directions to us are His commandments and the signposts are His promises.

When I obey His commands and walk in His promises, I will be on the right road, and I will safely and surely reach the final destination of my life that is heaven. I began my journey heavenward when I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and I will continue on the right road as long as I love Jesus and keep His commandments. Receiving the instructions from the gas station manager was easy. The hard part awaited me. Each time I made the right turn, I breathed a sigh of relief because I knew the promise of reaching my final destination was being fulfilled. All the promises in God’s Word are “yes and amen” through Jesus Christ. When I was driving, I did not have the visible presence of the gas station manager in the car with me, but I remembered his words. “Turn right at the light and go three blocks, then make a left turn at the convenience store and follow that road five miles. At the second stop sign you will see a Texaco station, take a left and your road will be the next street on the right.” Even though we do not have the visible presence of Jesus with us, we can hear the voice of His Spirit, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Have you lost your direction in this life? Are you doubting that you will reach your final destination? Go to the filling station (your quiet time where you pray and read God’s Word), and you will receive your bearings and once again be on the right path.

Lord, help me to go to the filling station every morning to get my directions for the journey of the day facing me. I want to walk in the path You have prepared for me. Don’t let me get diverted and make any wrong turns.
