Finding God’s Supernatural Amid the World’s Supernatural

What is your definition of the term “supernatural”? This term, although not found in Scripture, is found in various arenas with the expectation of everyone understanding the meaning. The catch is that the broad definition is something that is unexplainable or contributed to ghosts and monsters.

Years ago, a filmmaker doing a series about haunted houses did a segment on a place down the road from us. They talked about the supernatural. The definition of the producer was more like a house inhabited by ghosts, and I do not mean the Holy Ghost!

At times, people suggest using the term spiritual rather than supernatural. However, various cults and false religions would grab the term spiritual and spin it to align with their belief system.

I believe that we should be using the term supernatural. I also think that we should use the term spiritual. However, we need to understand what we mean by these terms. Finally, we need to ask for a spirit of wisdom and discernment to know when we need to have a conversation with someone about what the word means, from a Biblical standpoint, rather than assuming they are speaking the same language that we are.

Everything in Scripture shows us that we serve an extraordinary God who is known for the supernatural. Supernatural is in the very nature of our God.

We can find the supernatural all throughout Scripture. Let us look at:

  • Moses parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21)
  • Daniel not eaten by lions (Daniel 6)
  • Elijah’s offering consumed in the epic battle against the priests of Baal (1 Kings 18)
  • Peter walking on water (Matthew 14), flour and oil multiplying (1 Kings 17)
  • The dead raised (Luke 7, Matthew 9, Mark 5, Luke 8, John 11)
  • Blind eyes opening (John 9)
  • Lame walking (John 5, Acts 3)
  • Angel armies going into battle (2 Kings 6)

These miracles, or supernatural events Jesus performed, while others by the prophets and disciples. Each one had a Heavenly origin with the individual’s obedience to God and stepping into a moment.

John 14:12-14 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” (NLT). We follow what Jesus modeled for us and stand on the Word of God. Therefore, we cannot run from a term because others use it, but we must be wise and discerning ready to point to Jesus, the mover of mountains, healing, redeemer, and Savior.
