Erick Stakelbeck, host of “The Watchman Newscast,” recently drew a striking comparison between Hamas and Amalek, an ancient biblical enemy of Israel.
In his discussion, he posed a powerful question: Is Hamas the modern-day incarnation or reincarnation of Amalek? This idea is deeply rooted in both history and Scripture, highlighting the recurring nature of spiritual warfare against God’s chosen people.
Biblical Connection
The Amalekites, first introduced in Exodus 17, were relentless adversaries of Israel. They attacked the Israelites in the wilderness, targeting the weak and defenseless. This act of cowardice prompted God’s declaration in Exodus 17:16: “The Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.” Later, in Deuteronomy 25:17-19, Israel was commanded to “blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”
Stakelbeck, referencing an article from “The Times of Israel,” emphasized the enduring nature of this enmity: “There’s an Amalek in every generation. In this generation, it’s manifested—it’s represented by Hamas.” If Amalek is the personification of evil set against Israel, then Hamas, with its brutal terrorist tactics and genocidal intentions, fits this description with chilling accuracy.

A Modern Manifestation of Ancient Hatred
Stakelbeck did not mince words when describing Hamas’s atrocities.
“Hamas may be the most demonic entity on the planet right now,” he declares. The gruesome murder of the Bibas family was not only committed but celebrated in Gaza. This depravity mirrors the biblical Amalekites, who had no regard for the sanctity of life and attacked the vulnerable without remorse.
The Bible reveals that Amalek’s goal was not just military conquest but the annihilation of Israel. Hamas operates in the same spirit: “Their sole purpose is to destroy Israel… It’s an ancient evil that has survived from generation to generation.” The Hamas charter explicitly calls for the obliteration of Israel, making the comparison between them and Amalek not just symbolic but alarmingly real.
The Spirit of Amalek: A Principality of Darkness
The spirit of Amalek is more than just a historical enemy—it is a persistent, malevolent force that seeks to destroy God’s people in every generation. This principality operates beyond physical warfare; it is a spiritual entity that stirs hatred, deception and violence against Israel.
Ephesians 6:12 declares: “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” The battle against Amalek, therefore, is not merely a military struggle but a spiritual one. This force has resurfaced time and again, manifesting in different entities—including Hamas today.
Hamas’ actions align with the same destructive spirit that drove Amalek’s attacks on Israel. Their explicit goal to annihilate the Jewish people, their unrepentant brutality and their celebration of terror reveal the continuation of this dark force. Amalek was condemned to total destruction in the Bible because its very existence was a direct challenge to God’s plan for His people. Similarly, Hamas, in embodying this spirit, positions itself in direct opposition to God’s promises to Israel.
Stakelbeck is unequivocal about what must be done: “Hamas has to go and go for good.” The biblical mandate against Amalek was total eradication—because as long as Amalek remained, Israel’s survival was at risk. Today, Israel faces the same existential threat from Hamas, a group that has proven negotiation, appeasement and ceasefires only buy time for further violence.
