The Bible calls faith “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1). Some think faith is a way to say they believe in something. Others believe it represents the religions of the world.

Jesus himself spoke about faith many times. On one occasion, He declared, “Have faith in God” (Mark 11:22), teaching us that we should be possessors of faith and only one is worthy of it. In another passage, Jesus asserted, “Oh you of little faith” (Matt. 8:26b), denoting that faith is measurable and that the disciples lacked what they needed. There was still room for growth. He even taught a parable about faith and its powerful effect. He compared it to a tiny mustard seed, but its potential was massive growth and shelter for others (see Matt. 13:31-34).

But on this occasion, in Luke 8:25b, Jesus said, “Where is Your faith?” He is not simply rebuking the disciples for not having any faith. The question of “where” was not an indictment of lack of faith. Instead, it was the explanation of how they had misplaced their faith.

The word “where” in this passage is a directional word. It means they put their faith somewhere it didn’t belong. It’s a reference to a place.

Don’t we do that too? We say we trust God. But when a storm arises, we find we have placed our faith in other people, places or things. When those things violently shake, we have no faith.

Faith only works when placed in the one who is always faithful. Storms will appear suddenly and without warning, and the winds and waves will beat relentlessly against us. Yet we have the constant hope of knowing Jesus in our boat with us. So have faith in God. He’s given us His Word, and we are going to the other side. {eoa}
