How Will You Respond to Tragedy?

Have you ever encountered an unexpected tragedy? What do you do when you find yourself gasping for air as you grieve an incomprehensible loss?

When Georgi, a young man from Bulgaria faced his own personal tragedy, his response was both beautiful and extraordinary.

Georgi’s father was a strong, hardworking Bulgarian man who was determined to provide everything he could for his wife and three children. When he earned enough money to purchase a second family car for his wife to drive, he couldn’t hide his self-satisfaction. The used Fiat Punto wasn’t extravagant, but it was exactly what his wife needed to drive to work, chauffeur the kids and pick up food for the evening meals.

“You need to test the car to make sure it’s safe before I start driving it,” his mother insisted. Georgi’s father eagerly agreed to drive the car to their family village located about an hour away. Although 14-year-old Georgi usually looked for any opportunity to spend time with his gregarious dad, on this fateful day he declined his father’s invitation to come along for the ride. Georgi never could have imagined that this would be the last day he’d see his father alive.

While test-driving the car, his father was in a car accident. The Italian car exploded in flames, and in one shocking moment, Georgi’s father moved from earth to heaven.

Following his father’s death, Georgi knew that he had only two options: He could accuse God, demanding an answer to why this happened to his family, or he could cling to God saying, “Despite these circumstances—I want you because of you, God.”
